Plot summary

Paul Cartwright, a college student who hopes to follow his late father, Judge Albert Cartwright, into criminology, is troubled by a nightmare that returns night after night. In it, his father's death in a train wreck years earlier was no accident, and a faceless figure is behind it. When details from the dream begin to appear in his waking life, Paul fixes on his mother Virginia's suitor, Brett Curtis, a man he takes to be the criminal Claude Barrington, whom the judge had been writing about and who is officially listed as dead. Virginia, pressured to marry, and Paul's sister Dorothy have fallen for Curtis's charm, so Paul cannot tell them what he fears. His confidant is the family friend Dr. Vincent.
