Plot summary
Vi Mason arrives on a Cape Cod island to see Tom Stewart, the jazz pianist she once dated, and tells him that his coming marriage to Meg Hubbard will not happen. She is ready to use blackmail to stop it. The argument between them ends at the top of a lighthouse, where the railing gives way. In the days that follow, Tom finds Vi impossible to put behind him: her watch is found on the beach, marks appear in the sand, and her ghost announces she will not leave him alone. When Meg's younger sister Sandy wants to try the wedding ring on, a hand that nobody can see takes it.
