Biography

Leona Roberts was an American stage and film actress who spent most of her career in supporting parts. Born in Monroe Center, Ohio, she made her Broadway debut in 1926 and appeared in about 40 productions there through 1945, largely in secondary roles. Her screen career began in 1926 with the lead in Poor Mrs. Jones, a United States Department of Agriculture production. She moved to Hollywood in 1937 and played in more than 40 films, often as motherly figures. She was the house servant Mrs. Gogarty in Bringing Up Baby (1938), the screwball comedy with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, and in Gone with the Wind (1939) she was the society gossip Mrs. Meade. Her other films included Of Human Hearts (1938) and The Blue Bird (1940). After returning to Broadway in 1941, she made a few later Hollywood movies, among them The Loves of Carmen (1948), with her final film arriving in 1949.
