Plot summary

In 1933, in the middle of a drought, a cougar comes down from the high country into the Utah farmlands, where it preys on cattle. The farmers who have gone after it have not managed to kill it. Danny Turner, a city boy, comes to the area to live at his late mother's birthplace, a farm now held by his stepfather, Tom Eggars. A neighbor, Gil Hawks, is hostile to Tom, and the two men have quarreled for a long time. Not long after Danny's arrival, Tom and Gil scuffle. Danny meets Doris Cooper and takes a liking to her.
