Garry Marshall

Garry Marshall, who died in 2016, was a writer, producer, director and actor. A Bronx native, he first wrote jokes for comedians such as Joey Bishop and Phil Foster and contributed to The Tonight Show with Jack Paar. He moved to Hollywood in 1961 and wrote for sitcoms including The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Lucy Show before adapting Neil Simon's play The Odd Couple for television. In the 1970s he created Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy. He later directed features such as Beaches (1988), Pretty Woman (1990), Runaway Bride (1999), The Princess Diaries (2001), Valentine's Day (2010) and New Year's Eve (2011), and he acted in Lost in America (1985), Soapdish (1991), With Friends Like These... (1998), Orange County (2002), Chicken Little (2005), Keeping Up with the Steins (2006), Race to Witch Mountain (2009) and Life After Beth (2014). Honors included a place in the Television Hall of Fame in 1997.
