Plot summary
A score can carry a scene's emotion while audiences barely register it as music, and the documentary turns to the people who write them. Composers, directors, orchestrators, agents and scholars, more than sixty interviewees, describe how a score takes shape and how they treat that work as part of telling a movie's story. The film follows the craft's history and looks at landmark scores and themes that entered general culture. A psychologist explains the effect movie music has on listeners. Composers discuss changing technology and tastes, the choice of whether to conduct, and scores reused without their consent. The project started with a 2015 Kickstarter campaign that aimed for $40,000 and raised $120,930 in 30 days.

- Director Matt Schrader left his job as a CBS News investigative journalist in 2014 to make the documentary, paid for camera lenses and editing equipment from his own savings, and recruited friends to his team, among them producers Trevor Thompson, Jonathan Willbanks and Nate Gold and former KOVR-TV news photographer Kenny Holmes.
