Plot summary
Chicken Little lives in the town of Oakey Oaks, where he rings the school bell to warn everyone that the sky is falling, because something struck his head while he sat beneath a big oak. He cannot show anyone the piece. His father, Buck, a widower and a former high school baseball star, concludes that an acorn fell on him, and the town makes the boy its joke. A year later his only companions are Abby Mallard, Runt of the Litter, an oversized pig, and Fish Out of Water, a goldfish who lives on land in a water-filled helmet.

- Mark Dindal first pitched Chicken Little as a paranoid female chicken voiced by Holly Hunter, sent to summer camp to calm her anxiety, with Penn Jillette as a scheming camp counsellor. Michael Eisner demanded the character be turned into a boy.
- David Stainton replaced Thomas Schumacher as president of Walt Disney Feature Animation in January 2003 and walked into a test screening of Chicken Little for Michael Eisner on his very first day at the studio; he was unimpressed and decided the story needed a different approach.
- Rewriting Chicken Little, Dindal, his three credited writers and nine other people threw out twenty-five scenes to strengthen the parent-child relationship. Dindal reckoned it took about two and a half years to get back roughly to where they had started.
- To make its first fully computer-animated feature, Disney moved half of its 2D animation staff into a CGI team and put them through an eighteen-month training programme run with George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic, learning Maya as the film's main 3D software.
- Chicken Little went through fourteen or fifteen designs before the animators settled on an egg-shaped head with oversized glasses. The finished character was built from 5,600 polygons, 700 muscles and more than 76,000 individual feathers, 55,000 of them on his head alone.
