Plot summary
Mary Jane, a suburban high schooler in the Twin Cities, works at a city cinema and has started asking questions about sex. Her first time with Steve goes nothing like the version in the movies. At the cinema she gets to know Ericka, a bisexual punk musician; Matt, an alcoholic; Ryan, who collects smiley-face memorabilia; and Dave, her gay boss. The staff secretly bets on one another's relationships and sexual activity. Jane swears off sex and relationships. The next day she is put in charge of training a new employee, Tom, and Steve turns up to ask her out again. For a class project, she interviews friends about Zamboni, a country she invented where women have equal rights, and her classmates disapprove.
