Frank Moran

Biography

Frank Moran was an American boxer and actor who twice challenged for the world heavyweight title and later spent twenty-five years as a movie character actor. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he trained in dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh. He began prize-fighting in 1908, faced Jack Johnson in 1914 and Jess Willard in 1916 for the heavyweight championship, lost both, and retired after 66 bouts with 36 wins, 13 losses, 16 draws, and one no contest. After a 1926 Broadway show and silent film work in 1928, his screen career took hold in 1933 with The Prizefighter and the Lady and She Done Him Wrong. He was typically cast as gangsters, henchmen, bartenders, sailors, guards, and cops, and appeared in Preston Sturges films including The Great McGinty (1940), Sullivan's Travels (1941), and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944). Other credits included Follow the Fleet (1936) and Return of the Ape Man (1944). He made his last film appearance in 1957.
