First role
Bressart first acted in 1914, taking the role of Malvolio in Twelfth Night. His career later took him to Austria, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Hungary and Yugoslavia.
First role
Bressart was already an experienced stage actor by the time he made his film debut in 1927, and he began in supporting parts such as the bailiff in the hit Die Drei von der Tankstelle.
Big break
Bressart's first American movie was Three Smart Girls Grow Up (1939), a Deanna Durbin vehicle. Joe Pasternak, a former European colleague of Bressart's, picked him to appear in a screen test with Pasternak's newest discovery, Gloria Jean.
A first
After leaving MGM in 1945, Bressart took his largest role in the RKO musical comedy Ding Dong Williams, playing a movie studio's music department supervisor and conducting an orchestral version of Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu in formal wear.
