Plot summary
Edna Kahly and her adopted sister Charlotte each expect to marry soon, but a prospective mother-in-law learns that Charlotte was a foundling and refuses to let the wedding go ahead. Edna falls for Sam Gladney, a bank cashier, and marries him, moving with him to Sherman, Texas, where he has a flour mill. A difficult delivery leaves her unable to bear more children. Sam urges her to adopt a foundling, and the girl's story moves Edna to start a place where working mothers can leave their children during the day. When Sam's business fails, the couple auctions their possessions and moves to Fort Worth, where Edna opens a home for orphans and children born outside marriage, placing them with families despite the objections of citizens who condemn such children.
