Plot summary
Lieutenant Robin Crusoe, a Naval Aviator, is flying a routine mission from his aircraft carrier when an emergency forces him out of his F-8 Crusader into the ocean. He drifts for days in an emergency life raft before he comes ashore on an island with no inhabitants. There he builds a shelter, makes clothing from what he finds, and explores, discovering a Japanese submarine left from World War II. Inside it he meets Floyd, a chimpanzee NASA sent up as an astronaut. With the submarine's tools and blueprints the pair build a Japanese pavilion and a golf course, and Crusoe rigs bottles to carry letters for his fiancée out to sea. The island is not empty: a young woman he names Wednesday says her father, the chieftain Tanamashu, intends to sacrifice her because she refuses to marry.
