Dave Grohl

Biography

Dave Grohl is an American musician and songwriter who founded Foo Fighters and serves as its lead singer, guitarist and main songwriter. Born in Warren, Ohio, he joined the punk band Scream at 17 and in 1990 became the drummer for Nirvana, first appearing on Nevermind (1991). After Nirvana ended in 1994, he recorded the Foo Fighters debut album largely by himself, then built a full band around it, and their records include Wasting Light, their first to top the American chart. He has also drummed with Queens of the Stone Age and co-founded Them Crooked Vultures, directed the documentary Sound City (2013), and starred with Foo Fighters in Studio 666 (2022). Rolling Stone ranked him the 27th-best drummer of all time in 2016, and he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Nirvana in 2014 and with Foo Fighters in 2021.

  1. First role

At 17, Grohl tried out for the band Scream after drummer Kent Stax departed. He claimed to be older, and when the band invited him in, he quit high school during his junior year.

  2. Early training

Grohl never took formal drum lessons. He learned the instrument himself by listening to Rush and punk rock, and hearing Rush's 2112 when he was eight made him want to become a drummer.

  3. A role that slipped away

Grohl declined an offer to drum for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers permanently, though in November he did join them for a short stint that included a Saturday Night Live performance.

  4. A first

From October 26, 2002, to March 1, 2003, Grohl topped the Billboard modern rock chart for 17 of 18 straight weeks, playing in three separate groups.

  5. A first

Grohl made his first Saturday Night Live appearance as a musical guest in 1992. He has been a musical guest on the show 15 times, more than any other musician, appearing with Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, Mick Jagger, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

  6. Behind the camera

Grohl produced and directed Sound City, a 2013 documentary. It covers the story of the well-known Sound City Studios recording studios in Van Nuys, and it was his feature-length directorial debut, premiering at Sundance in 2013.
