Taylor Hawkins

Biography

Taylor Hawkins was an American musician who drummed and sang for the band Foo Fighters from 1997 until his death in 2022, after earlier tours with Sass Jordan and Alanis Morissette and a spell in the band Sylvia. With Foo Fighters he recorded eight studio albums between 1999 and 2021 and shared vocals with Dave Grohl, singing lead on Cold Day in the Sun and Sunday Rain. He led his own projects: Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, which released three albums between 2006 and 2019, the cover band Chevy Metal, the Birds of Satan, and the supergroup NHC, formed in 2020 with Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him with Foo Fighters in 2021, and Rhythm magazine named him Best Rock Drummer in 2005. He won three Grammys with Foo Fighters after his death in 2022. He played Iggy Pop in CBGB (2013) and appeared in Studio 666 (2022).

A role that slipped away
In 2000, Guns N' Roses contacted Hawkins about replacing Josh Freese on drums. He gave the offer serious thought, but Roger Taylor persuaded him to stay with Foo Fighters.
Big break
Grohl called Hawkins, then an acquaintance, to ask for drummer recommendations for the band. Hawkins surprised him by volunteering himself, saying he preferred drumming in a rock band to playing for a solo act.
First role
In 2013, Hawkins made his acting debut in the rock film CBGB, where he played the role of Iggy Pop.
