Pat Smear
Biography
Pat Smear is an American guitarist known for co-founding the Los Angeles punk band the Germs and for his work with Nirvana and Foo Fighters. Raised in West Los Angeles, he taught himself guitar and in 1976 started the Germs with vocalist Darby Crash; the band was featured in The Decline of Western Civilization (1981). He later played in Twisted Roots and 45 Grave. In 1993 he joined Nirvana as a second guitarist for a tour and appeared on the live album MTV Unplugged in New York (1993). After joining Foo Fighters in 1994 he left in 1997, returned as a touring guitarist in 2005 and became a full member in 2010. With the band he played on Wasting Light, which won the Grammy for Best Rock Album, and in 2021 he was among the Foo Fighters members honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He also appeared in Studio 666 (2022).

Big break
In 1993, Kurt Cobain phoned Pat Smear and asked him to become Nirvana's second guitarist on a tour. Smear first believed his friend Carlos "Cake" Nunez was pranking him, though Courtney Love had said days before that Cobain would call.
A first
During a live performance at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, Smear said he was leaving Foo Fighters. He played partway through the set, then brought out Stahl, who finished the gig.
Behind the award
Smear entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on October 30, 2021, as a member of the Foo Fighters. The same year, The Go-Go's were inducted, including Belinda Carlisle, who had played with him in The Germs.
A first
Pat Smear was the only member of the Germs with any musical knowledge or proficiency when the band formed in 1976, and for most of his time in the group he did not own a guitar, borrowing from whoever they played with.
Behind the camera
Smear was a creative consultant on What We Do Is Secret, a film about the Germs and Darby Crash. In 2005, he began playing reunion shows with the Germs, with actor Shane West as lead vocalist.
