Kurt Cobain
Biography
Kurt Cobain was an American singer, guitarist and songwriter who, as the lead vocalist and main writer of Nirvana, became one of the most influential figures in rock music. Raised in Aberdeen, Washington, in a family with a musical background, he formed the band Fecal Matter after leaving high school, then started Nirvana with Krist Novoselic. The group recorded its debut album Bleach in 1989, and with Dave Grohl on drums signed to DGC and broke through with Nevermind (1991) and its single Smells Like Teen Spirit, which popularized grunge. Cobain wrote songs such as Come as You Are, Lithium and Heart-Shaped Box, but was uneasy about being cast as a spokesman for his generation. He died in 1994, and was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Nirvana in 2014; Rolling Stone later ranked him among the greatest songwriters, guitarists and singers.

First role
In early 1985, after dropping out of Aberdeen High School, Cobain formed Fecal Matter, one of several joke bands from the circle of friends around the Melvins. It initially had Cobain singing and on guitar, Dale Crover on bass and Greg Hokanson on drums.
Beyond film
In 1989, Cobain joined a side project called the Jury with members of Screaming Trees, recording four Lead Belly songs over two days, including a solo performance on one track.

Cobain contacted William S. Burroughs in 1992 for a collaboration, adding guitar backing to Burroughs's recording of "The Junky's Christmas" for the spoken-word piece "The 'Priest' They Called Him."
