Biography
Courtney Love is an American singer and actress who was born in San Francisco and raised mainly in Portland, Oregon. She took supporting parts in Alex Cox's Sid and Nancy (1986) and Straight to Hell (1987), then formed the band Hole in 1989. Hole's debut, Pretty on the Inside (1991), was produced by Kim Gordon and drew praise from the underground rock press. Live Through This (1994), their second album, sold multi-platinum and earned strong reviews. Love went back to acting in 1995, and her role as Althea Leasure in The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) brought a Golden Globe nomination and a New York Film Critics Circle Award. Her later films include Man on the Moon (1999), Beat (2000), and Trapped (2002). Celebrity Skin (1998) received three Grammy nominations, and she released her solo debut, America's Sweetheart, in 2004. She appeared in Sons of Anarchy and Empire between 2014 and 2015.

A change of course
In late 1988, Love taught herself guitar and moved to Los Angeles. There she put an ad in a local music zine that said she wanted to start a band, naming Big Black, Sonic Youth and Fleetwood Mac as influences.
A role that slipped away
Love was fired from Faith No More after briefly fronting the group, with keyboardist Roddy Bottum saying the band wanted a "male energy."
Early training
Love decided to focus on acting and enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied film under experimental director George Kuchar. In Oakland she also took experimental theater courses taught by Whoopi Goldberg.
Behind the camera
Before Celebrity Skin came out, Love worked with Fender on the Vista Venus, a low-priced Squier guitar. Its shape drew on Mercury, a little-known independent guitar maker, plus Stratocaster and Rickenbacker solid body guitars.
