Plot summary
In 1944 New York City, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Lucien Carr, David Kammerer and William S. Burroughs meet Joan Vollmer, a Barnard College student, and Joan and William begin a romance. By 1951 they are married in Mexico City with Joan's daughter Julie and their son William Jr. Joan is unhappy there. William is having an affair with Lee and goes to Guatemala to meet him. Lucien and Allen arrive from New York, and Joan goes with Lucien to a local bar.

Director Gary Walkow initially sought to shoot Beat in the original Mexico City apartment building where Joan Vollmer and William S. Burroughs lived, but the building had been demolished by the time he scouted locations. The film instead used an apartment building across the street from the real one.- Gary Walkow originally planned to structure Beat in two chronological acts, with the first set in 1944 New York City and the second in 1951 Mexico City. He instead decided to present the 1944 backstory as flashbacks narrated by Allen Ginsberg.
- The film shows Joan Vollmer leaving her two children behind during a trip to the Parícutin volcano with Allen Ginsberg and Lucien Carr, but in reality she brought them along.
