Plot summary
Will Jennings is a research physician who has patented a new anesthetic drug, and after speaking about it at a conference in Seattle, he is approached by a woman named Cheryl, who says she admires his work. She pulls a gun and forces him into his hotel room, where she tells him that his daughter Abby is being held for ransom. Cheryl's husband Joe has entered the Jennings house in Portland, Oregon, and when Karen Jennings comes home with Abby, Joe sends her off with his cousin Marvin and keeps Karen at gunpoint. Marvin takes Abby to a cabin in the woods and learns that she needs an inhaler for asthma. When an attack begins he telephones Joe, and Joe drives Karen to the cabin so she can give her daughter the medication.

- Cinematographer Piotr Sobocinski died of a heart attack a week into the shoot. Frederick Elmes stepped in for the rest of the film, Sobocinski kept a posthumous credit shared with him, and the film was dedicated to him.
- Greg Iles had to change the child he wrote: in his novel 24 Hours the kidnapped Abby is a type 1 diabetic who needs insulin, and she was rewritten as an asthmatic for the film because Panic Room, also from 2002, already had a diabetic child in similar peril.
