Plot summary
Captain Benjamin Briggs and Captain Morehead are best friends. Morehead loves Sarah and takes Briggs with him to New York to be introduced to her, but Briggs and Sarah come to love each other. The two men propose marriage to her on one day, and she picks Briggs. Morehead is enraged and believes his friend has tricked him; Briggs says he intends to marry Sarah whether or not the friendship survives. With the voyage being prepared, Briggs has too few men. He asks Morehead for forgiveness and for help, and Morehead agrees. Briggs signs on other sailors as well, among them Anton Lorenzen, a man who has suffered a great deal and is near a mental breakdown. Once at sea, the crew comes to see that a murderer is on board, killing the men one at a time.
