Plot summary
Michael Hunter, a psychiatrist, is at his daughter Shelly's school play when his son Kyle, who has been in therapy for depression, kills himself in the family garage. The loss breaks the marriage: Michael's wife and Shelly move away, and Michael gives up treating patients for writing and teaching. A former student then asks him to look at the case of Thomas Caffey, seventeen, who repressed the memory of watching his father kill his mother and has been held in a psychiatric facility since. Joseph Caffey is in prison. With Tommy's eighteenth birthday approaching, Michael, struck by how much the boy resembles Kyle, agrees to take him on.
