Plot summary
Jesse, sixteen, has a job on the Noah, a ship whose crew studies orcas, and his old friend Randolph is with him to keep him out of trouble. Ten-year-old Max Wesley is making his first voyage on the Botany Bay with his father John, whose family has long worked as whalers, a trade that sells whale meat to a market in Japan. When a spear turns up stuck in Willy's fin, Jesse and Randolph read it as a sign that whalers posing as commercial fishermen are after the pod, among them Willy's pregnant mate Nicky. Drake, who runs the research ship, wants proof before he acts. Jesse and Max meet, and Jesse brings the boy to Willy.
