Biography

Jason James Richter is an American performer whose work spans acting, music, producing and directing, and he first became known as a child actor. Originally from Medford, Oregon, he was selected from more than 4,000 hopefuls to play Jesse in Free Willy (1993), then returned for Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (1995) and Free Willy 3: The Rescue (1997). His other early screen credits include Cops & Robbersons (1994), The NeverEnding Story III (1994) and Laserhawk (1997), along with small screen appearances in Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and The Client, plus Rugrats. For Free Willy he earned a Young Artist Award and also drew MTV Movie Award nominations. After a decade away from acting, when he played bass in Fermata, he came back in The Little Things (2021). He produced The Last Rampage (2017) and Natty Knocks (2023), and his first directing effort was the short The Quiet Loud in 2013, which he wrote and produced.
