Plot summary
Private detective Ted Shane goes back to work with his former partner Ames, whose wife Astrid dated Shane before she married Ames. Valerie Purvis hires the detectives to find a man called Farrow. Shane becomes a suspect in both murders after Ames and Farrow are found dead. His office and apartment have been ransacked. Anthony Travers has locked Shane's secretary Miss Murgatroyd in a closet while he searches for an eighth-century ram's horn said to be full of jewels. Madame Barabbas also wants the horn and has a gunman bring Shane to her. Shane negotiates with all of them for the horn.

- Warner Bros. already owned the rights to Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon and had contract writer Brown Holmes adapt it again; he turned the jewel-encrusted falcon statuette into a ram's horn filled with gems, renamed Sam Spade "Ted Shane", changed a male criminal mastermind to a female one, and retitled the story The Man in the Black Hat and then Men on Her Mind.
- Bette Davis, by then in London, was placed on suspension again for refusing to portray a lumberjack in God's Country and the Woman; she later said "I won't do it! Satan Met a Lady was bad enough, but this is absolute tripe."
- After principal photography, art director Max Parker assembled a rough cut that confused studio heads so much that Warren Low was assigned to re-edit the film.
