Plot summary
The Blair sisters lost their parents, who had worked on the stage, and they live at the Lakeside Orphanage for Girls with a pony named Spunky and a duck named Betsy. Mary, the elder, is past the age for adoption, so she cooks and cleans to earn her keep. Elizabeth's singing and dancing keep getting her into trouble. Mrs. Higgins, the superintendent, says she will sell the pony and the duck after Spunky is smuggled indoors. On inspection day a young trustee, Edward Morgan, hears Elizabeth sing.
