Plot summary
Paul Callow works as a driver on the London Underground. A man dies under his train when a dog pulls him onto the tracks, and a week later a passenger suffers a heart attack and falls. Colleagues mention a rule nobody talks about: three deaths under a driver's train in a single month, and the driver leaves with ten years' salary. Paul's week off means he has until Monday to find a third. On Holborn Viaduct he pulls Tommy Cassidy back from the edge, and over a drink in a bar he offers the down-and-out Irishman money to step in front of his train. Tommy asks what money is worth to a dead man, then agrees, provided the weekend is spent making his peace with the family he left eight years ago.

- Before Three and Out was released, the train drivers' union ASLEF, which had not seen it, called its plot "insulting and foolish" and said drivers involved in such incidents suffer "life-changing traumas"; the union protested at the premiere, handing out leaflets.
- Although Three and Out is set around the London Underground, most of the action takes place above ground, in North London, Liverpool and Cumbria, and a scene set in South Africa was filmed in Gibraltar.
