Plot summary
At the funeral of their grandfather Johann von Wolfhausen, brothers Jan and Todd Wolfhouse learn that family custom requires them to scatter his ashes in Munich during Oktoberfest. A brawl in a beer tent brings them into contact with a man called Mr. Schniedelwichsen, who leads them to Beerfest, a secret international drinking tournament run by Baron Wolfgang von Wolfhausen. The German branch of the family rejects any kinship, insisting that Johann was only a stable boy who took their finest beer recipe and fled with their great-grandmother. When the brothers challenge their hosts and lose badly in front of the crowd, they return to Colorado and recruit three old drinking friends, Landfill, Fink and Barry, to train a year for the next contest.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Jay Chandrasekhar has said the idea came from a beer garden in Australia, where the Broken Lizard troupe, still in their police uniforms, went on stage and challenged the room's top five drinkers to a chug-off. They were winning until Paul Soter took his turn and they lost.
- The promise at the end of the film that a sequel called Potfest was coming soon was never a plan: Broken Lizard put it there purely as a joke to drum up publicity, and then found that fans were enthusiastic about the title.
