Plot summary
Libby Tucker, a 19-year-old from Brooklyn, visits her grandmother's grave and announces that she is going to Hollywood to become an actress and to find her father, Herbert Tucker, a screenwriter. She takes a bus to Denver and hitchhikes the rest of the way, then loses her nerve when she telephones him and hangs up. The next morning she goes to the house where he lives and meets Steffy Blondell, his girlfriend, who invites her inside. Steffy leaves, and Herb wakes to see the daughter he has not seen in sixteen years. They talk about the family he left behind in Brooklyn, including Libby's younger brother Robbie, and quarrel about her acting ambitions. When Steffy returns, Libby runs out.
