Aki Aleong
Biography
Aki Aleong was a Trinidadian actor and singer who built a long career as a character actor, accumulating more than 130 screen and television credits from 1956 to 2025. Born in Port of Spain, he moved to Brooklyn in 1949, attended Brooklyn College, and got his start in a Broadway production of The Teahouse of the August Moon, playing Goat Boy. His first significant film part came in No Down Payment (1957). On television he played Senator Hidoshi on Babylon 5 and Mr. Chiang on V: The Series, and his film work included Farewell to the King and The Hanoi Hilton (1987). In music, he co-wrote and produced the doo-wop record Shombalor, had a charting single with Trade Winds, Trade Winds, and held executive posts at Capitol, Polydor, and Liberty Records. He left the music business in 1983 to act full time. Aki Aleong died in 2025.

Aleong answered a casting call while working part-time at a hardware store and was cast as the Goat Boy in the Broadway play The Teahouse of the August Moon, which launched his acting career.
A change of course
In 1983, Aleong stopped working in the music industry so that he could give all his attention to acting full time.
Beyond film
In 1958, Aleong helped write and produce Shombalor, a nonsense doo-wop song credited to Sheriff and the Ravels, which came out on Vee-Jay records.
Beyond film
Aleong sang lead vocals on the 1963 Vee-Jay album Come Surf With Me, credited to Aki Aleong and The Nobles. The record was mostly instrumental and later became a favorite among collectors.
