Plot summary
Colonel James Braddock, a Vietnam War veteran, left the country in 1975 believing his wife, Lin Tan Cang, had died. Twelve years later the missionary Reverend Polanski tells him that Lin is alive and that they have a son, Van Tan Cang, who is twelve. Braddock doubts the claim until a CIA official, Littlejohn, advises him to disregard it. He then arranges a return to Vietnam, parachuting in with help from an Australian C-47 pilot and outrunning Vietnamese Navy patrol boats in a jet-powered speedboat. Reverend Polanski works at an orphanage for Amerasian children, and he takes Braddock to where Lin and Van are living. Van has grown up believing that his father abandoned him.

- Production was marred by real tragedy: on May 30, 1987, four military and police officers were killed in an AUH-76 helicopter of the Philippine Air Force accident during filming in the Philippines.
- Chuck Norris said he really was not interested in doing a third film until his brother Aaron asked whether he had read about the 15,000 Amerasian children trapped in Vietnam and considered outcasts; Norris read up on the subject and got emotionally involved.
- Norris was particularly affected by a segment on the ABC television show 20/20 about an American soldier whom the Army would not let marry the pregnant woman he loved in Vietnam; she had the baby there and died, and he spent the next 14 years getting the child out of the country.
- Norris was frustrated with the job Cannon Films did marketing the picture and said he was ready to break his contract because it was the best of the series; at a big meeting he warned he would take them to court, because his career was on the line.
