Plot summary

In the Bakumatsu, Kenshin Himura is a hitokiri for the Ishin Shishi. In the Meiji era he lives as a pacifist, traveling from Tokyo to Yokohama with Kaoru Kamiya, Sagara Sanosuke and Myojin Yahiko. In Yokohama he stops a group of sailors from attacking a young woman named Toki, and he befriends the former samurai Takimi Shigure. Saito Hajime, a policeman who once captained the Shinsengumi, warns Kenshin that the government finds Shigure suspicious and links him to criminals and terrorists. Yahiko becomes friendly with one of Shigure's men, Yasuharu Musashino, and learns that the group is preparing to bring down the Meiji government. Sanosuke gathers word that Shigure is recruiting survivors of earlier wars into an army.
