Plot summary

Three decades after the Zentradi war, the U.N. government runs tests of transforming fighter aircraft on the colony planet Eden. Two test pilots are chosen for Project Super Nova: Isamu Alva Dyson in Shinsei Industries' YF-19 and Guld Goa Bowman in General Galaxy's YF-21. The winner is meant to succeed the VF-11 Thunderbolt in U.N. Spacy service. The men are former childhood friends whose grudges disrupt the trials. The rivalry grows sharper when Myung Fang Lone reappears; the two pilots knew her as a child. Myung produces Sharon Apple, the galaxy's most popular entertainer, an AI hologram that is incomplete and needs Myung's emotions to perform.

To depict the flight scenes realistically, Shōji Kawamori, action choreographer and animator Ichiro Itano and other staff took training sessions with the dogfighting school Air Combat USA at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the model for planet Eden's New Edwards base.
Macross Plus was a groundbreaking mix of traditional cel animation and computer-generated imagery that paved the way for more CGI in Japanese animation.
Macross Plus toys, first made by Yamato Toys in 2000, are not widely available in the U.S. because of ongoing legal disputes between Big West and Tatsunoko Production/Harmony Gold USA over the Macross copyright.
