Plot summary

Three years after Major Motoko Kusanagi vanished, Public Security Section 9 assigns Batou, a cyborg operative, and Togusa, an agent with almost no cybernetic upgrades, to a string of deaths blamed on faulty gynoids, doll-like sex robots. No cause for the failures has been found, so the deaths are treated as premeditated murder, and the pair are told to look for political or terrorist motives. The recovered remains of the latest unit carry an illegal ghost, pointing to human sentience being copied onto the dolls. One gynoid Batou subdued himself had its brain erased, leaving a single audio file, a voice saying help me. The forensic technician Haraway, who examines the machine, tells them the gynoids are sexaroids, fitted with organs they do not need.
