Plot summary

After the last Angel falls, Nerv and its Evangelion pilots believe their work is finished. Seele, the secret committee that controls Nerv, intends to carry out the Human Instrumentality Project and merge humanity into a single consciousness. Gendo Ikari pursues a different version of that project, so Seele sends the Japan Strategic Self-Defense Forces to seize Nerv and deploys nine mass-produced Evangelion units. Major Misato Katsuragi orders Asuka Langley Soryu moved into Evangelion Unit-02 and hidden at the bottom of a lake, then searches for Shinji Ikari, who is lost in self-hatred. She needs him to pilot Unit-01 and defend the base as the assault closes in.
