In UC 0093, Char Aznable comes out of hiding and declares that his Neo Zeon movement will force the people of Earth into space, beginning by sending asteroids down at the planet. The Federation's Londo Bell task force, commanded by Bright Noa with Amuro Ray among its pilots, moves to stop him, and Amuro takes a custom Gundam into the fighting. On Earth, Federation Vice Minister Adenauer Paraya and his daughter Quess narrowly escape an asteroid strike on a shuttle, along with Bright's son Hathaway, who is drawn to Quess. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The original Gundam character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko declined to take part, so Hiroyuki Kitazume and Hidetoshi Omori shared animation direction; their inexperience stalled the film so badly that not one cut was raised for four months, and seven animation directors ended up jointly credited.
- Char's Counterattack was the first original Gundam theatrical release, and also the first Gundam production to use computer graphics, for a five-second shot of the Sweetwater colony rotating in space, made at Toyo Links.
- Yoshiyuki Tomino's first script draft ran over two hours and had Amuro Ray married to Beltorchika Irma from Zeta Gundam; worried that a married lead was wrong for a robot anime, the production dropped her and gave her role to two new characters, Chan Agi and Quess Paraya.
- Yoshiyuki Tomino later said he had "no recollection of making it as a movie", and was disgusted that Sunrise's management and investors such as Bandai looked at the film as content that could be sold in half a year.
- The colonies Londenion and Sweetwater were done in CG because of their intricate detail and rotation, and CG designer Hideki Nakano spent three months on the one-and-a-half minute scene so that the colony's immense size would carry in theaters.
- Mitsuki Yayoi, who voiced Chan Agi, struggled with the onomatopoeic expressions voice acting demands and needed many retakes, so her co-star Tōru Furuya, who played Amuro Ray, came to support and help with her recordings.
