Plot summary
On his walks around London, Graham Merrill keeps passing a pet shop, where a male river otter sits in the window. He buys the otter and calls him Mijbil, Mij for short. The animal turns his small flat upside down, so the two leave the city for a seaside cottage on the west coast of Scotland. They settle there and get to know the village doctor, Mary MacKenzie, and her dog Johnny. Mij and Johnny play in the water and run across the fields together.
