Plot summary
Twelve-year-old Billy Coleman lives in the Ozark Mountains and wants nothing more than coon dogs, but good hounds cost money his family does not have. When a Bluetick pup appears at his grandfather's store, the Pritchard boys buy it first out of spite, and his grandfather tells him he must earn dogs of his own. Billy takes on job after job until he has saved the fifty dollars two puppies will cost, then orders them. Live animals cannot travel by mail stage, so the pups wait at the depot in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, thirty miles away. Billy slips out of the house at night to fetch them.
