Plot summary
Jackie Durning is a single mother and a book editor in New York who has spent years shaping her son Angelo into a writer. Angelo gets into NYU to study writing, but he heads to California for the summer to stay with his father Peter's family. He does not call when he lands, and when Jackie stops by his dorm room with some things, she learns he has dropped out. She flies to California, where her driver Ramon takes her to Peter's house. At dawn Angelo comes out carrying a surfboard, and they follow him to a beach. Confronted, Angelo tells her that life in New York no longer interests him. Jackie decides she will learn to surf herself and hires Ian, a surfer she meets there, to teach her.
