Jack Raine
Biography
Jack Raine was an English actor of stage, television and film who was born in London in 1897. In the late 1920s and early 1930s he was a leading man in British cinema, starring in films such as The Hate Ship, Raise the Roof and Suspense. He later became a character actor, often playing sturdy figures of authority in films such as The Ghoul (1933), The Clairvoyant and Mine Own Executioner. He was Sir Graham Forbes in Calling Paul Temple (1948) and the earlier Send for Paul Temple, and took a rare co-starring role as a small time gangster in No Way Back. After moving to Hollywood in the 1950s, he played character parts in Julius Caesar (1953), Witness for the Prosecution, My Fair Lady, The Killing of Sister George (1968) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. On television he appeared in Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone and Ironside, and he played Dr. Watson opposite Basil Rathbone on Broadway.
