Plot summary
Isaiah Maxwell, a Black painter in Washington, D.C., wants to break into the art world. At a colleague's art show he meets Chenai Hungwe, a gallery owner, who asks him to make a piece for a coming exhibition, and Stevie Richmond, a Georgetown law student he connects with right away. The moment passes, until Isaiah's old friend Nick and Nick's girlfriend Mecca introduce the two again; the group stays out until morning. On the walk home they talk about themselves and exchange numbers. At the group show his friends are impressed but Chenai is not, leaving Isaiah deflated. Stevie encourages him and asks him to move in. She brings him to meet her family, where her parents ask about his background and finances, and her mother objects to Stevie's plan to practice law for people who cannot afford it.
