Horst Buchholz
Biography
Horst Buchholz was a German actor who worked in more than 60 feature films between 1951 and 2002. Born in Berlin, he started on stage in 1949 and entered films partly through foreign-language dubbing. After early small parts, Die Halbstarken (1956) made him a teenage favorite in Germany, and Confessions of Felix Krull (1957) brought full stardom. He moved into English-language films with Tiger Bay (1959), then played Chico in The Magnificent Seven (1960), a western that became a classic. He followed with Fanny (1961) and Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three (1961). His career shifted toward supporting roles in Raid on Entebbe (1976), Avalanche Express (1979), From Hell to Victory (1979), and Sahara (1983). Later he appeared in Faraway, So Close! (1993) and as Dr. Lessing in Life Is Beautiful (1997). He returned to America for Voyage of Terror (1998), and his last performances included Heller als der Mond (2000). He died in 2003.

Buchholz declined the lead part in A Fistful of Dollars, a 1964 film, because his agent told him to, and many other actors who were approached did the same.
A role that slipped away
Horst Buchholz turned down Tony in West Side Story and Sherif Ali in Lawrence of Arabia because of filming schedule conflicts. Omar Sharif ended up with the Lawrence of Arabia role.
A change of course
Buchholz moved into film work through foreign-language voice dubbing, taking parts such as Lampwick in Pinocchio and Ben Cooper in Johnny Guitar.
Languages
Buchholz provided the voice of Fa Zhou for the German version of Mulan, and he also appeared in Geisterstunde - Fahrstuhl ins Jenseits, Der kleine Unterschied and Dunckel.
Big break
Buchholz's performance in Die Halbstarken made him a teenage favorite in Germany, and the English-dubbed US release Teenage Wolfpack billed him as Henry Bookholt and promoted him as a new James Dean.
Big break
Buchholz reached full-fledged stardom with Confessions of Felix Krull in 1957, playing a narcissistic high-class conman in the lead role. Kurt Hoffmann directed the film, which was based on a novel by Thomas Mann.
