Plot summary
In 1876, Otis Clairborne opens a gateway to hell while digging for gold, and a strange being takes hold of him. Months later, a gang in Red Creek, Utah, shoots Sheriff Roy Pulsipher dead. He surfaces in an office of the Rest In Peace Department, where the manager Hano puts him to work fighting Deados. Roy commits himself and is sent back to Earth, landing in an outhouse and getting run over by buffalo, with Jeanne d'Arc as his partner. Since Roy is sure he shot one of the criminals and the man is still walking, he takes the gang for Deados. He and Jeanne stop a prison transport carrying three prisoners, among them Slim Samuels, whom they question about Clairborne's plans.
