Plot summary
Single mother Megan Nolan moves to a new town and feels guilty about uprooting Caitlin, her ten-year-old daughter. Caitlin knows no one nearby, and her closest companion is a neighbor's dog, so Megan takes her to a shelter to adopt a pet of their own. Caitlin picks Jake, the biggest and sloppiest dog in the pound, and he quickly turns Megan's new house into a shambles. Megan considers bringing Jake back to the shelter. Then Ben, a ballplayer, comes to the door and says Jake is his dog, because his roommate had left a gate open. Megan and Ben clash over the dog, and Ben wants to take Jake home.
