Plot summary
Cassandra "Cassie" Thomas, thirty, lives with her parents Stanley and Susan and waits tables at a coffee shop, where Gail is her only friend. She dropped out of medical school after her best friend, Nina Fisher, was raped by their classmate Al Monroe at a party while others watched; the school dismissed Nina's complaint, and Nina later died by suicide. At night, Cassie visits bars pretending to be drunk, then confronts the men who take her home. A former classmate, Ryan Cooper, now a pediatric surgeon, recognizes her at the shop and asks her out. She resists, then agrees. When Ryan mentions that Al is getting married, Cassie's anger returns, and she sets out to confront the people who dismissed what happened to Nina.

SPOILER
Fennell's first draft ended the film where Cassie's body is burned, but the financiers balked at a negative ending. She had earlier considered having Cassie appear at the wedding and kill the men responsible, but thought it unrealistic, and settled on a backup revenge plan instead.- The production crew deliberately chose male actors previously known for playing good or wholesome characters, to reinforce the idea that predators can be anyone.
