Plot summary
Bill Warr spots Jem Belcher at a fair, where the young man has just beaten the troupe's champion for coin, and offers to take him on as a fighter. Mary Belcher, Jem's mother, is appalled at the prospect, having long warned her son against that life. Jack Slack, Jem's grandfather, advises him that with discipline he could become a true champion, unlike Jack himself. Jem takes to prize fighting easily, beats the champion of England under Bill's coaching, and becomes a name across the country, to Mary's astonishment. The trappings of success then pull him toward vice and into the orbit of Lord Rushworth's decadent set.
