Michael McKell

Biography

Michael McKell is an English actor and singer whose career began in music, writing songs for performers such as Toyah Willcox, Dollar and Julien Clerc before he turned to acting. He became a familiar face on British television through roles including Inspector Trevor Hands in Murder Investigation Team, Dr. Nick West in Doctors and Nick Henshall in Emmerdale, and he received British Soap Awards nominations for his work in Doctors. On screen he appeared in the cult film Essex Boys (2000), Once Upon a Time in London (2019) and Prizefighter (2022), among others such as Beneath Still Waters and Outpost: Rise of the Spetsnaz. His stage work takes in West End musicals including Blood Brothers and Tonight's the Night, and he played Lank in Crazy for You in 2012.

Before acting, McKell was the singer and songwriter for the band The Park, and he wrote hits for Toyah Willcox, Dollar and Julien Clerc.
About the name
In 1985, McKell went on tour under the name Michael St James alongside the French star Julien Clerc, and he also worked with Serge Gainsbourg, the French singer-songwriter.
Big break
Ben Elton wrote the character Ronnie in his BBC comedy Blessed specifically for McKell, after McKell appeared in Elton's West End musical Tonight's the Night.
A first
McKell took on his first pantomime role as Abanazar in Aladdin, performed at the Derby Arena from 7 December 2015 to 3 January 2016.
