Plot summary

Maria Wyeth grew up in a Nevada town of 28 people and worked as a model before she became an actress. She is unhappily married to the temperamental producer Carter Lang, and they are separated. Maria is chronically depressed. Her daughter Kate, who has brain damage, is in a sanitarium because Carter insists on it, and he resents her visits. Maria wants to live somewhere with Kate and find joy there. Her closest friend is B.Z. Mendenhall, a gay man who is himself unhappy. She has also begun a relationship with the screenwriter Les Goodwin.
