Severn Darden
Biography
Severn Darden was an American comedian and actor who was a founding member of the Compass Players and The Second City, the Chicago improv troupe. Born in New Orleans and educated at the University of Chicago, he performed with Paul Sills's Compass Players in the mid-1950s before joining The Second City when Sills founded it in 1959. His live comedy lecture as the character Walther von der Vogelweide influenced two generations of comic performers, and he was described as an improviser's improviser. On screen, a signature role was Kropotkin, a laid-back Soviet agent, in The President's Analyst (1967). He played Kolp in the film Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), and later appeared in Real Genius (1985) and Back to School (1986). His television work included Car 54, Where Are You?, The Monkees, and Kolchak: The Night Stalker. He died in 1995.
