Plot summary
Rob Feld lives by himself in a cabin in the Oregon woods, hunting truffles with a foraging pig and selling them to Amir, who deals in luxury ingredients for high-end restaurants. One night, attackers beat Rob and carry off the pig. Rob turns to Amir for help, and a fellow truffle hunter points them toward two drug addicts, who say they took the animal for money and that it was brought to Portland. When Rob's old friend Edgar refuses to help, Rob brings Amir to a below-ground fighting ring for restaurant workers beneath the closed Portland Hotel and lets a man beat him in exchange for information.

- Pig's editor, Brett Bachman, grew up outside of Seattle, and that upbringing contributed to the idea of the character Rob (Nicolas Cage) saying "fuck Seattle" in a key moment of the film.
- To prepare, Michael Sarnoski gave Nicolas Cage books reflecting his character and the film, including the graphic novel Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli and chef Marco Pierre White's memoir The Devil in the Kitchen; Cage also trained with local chefs Christopher Czarnecki and Gabriel Rucker.
- Michael Sarnoski divided Pig into three parts, inspired by the three courses of a meal, and the film's theme of loss was influenced by the death of the director's father.
- Composers Alexis Grapsas and Philip Klein used acoustic instruments and warm sounds, such as a baritone violin, to represent Rob's peaceful wilderness home.
