Plot summary
Eighteen months after hundreds of millions of people vanished, the world has fallen into chaos and Nicolae Carpathia rules the Global Community. Rayford Steele, his daughter Chloe, Buck Williams, Bruce Barnes and Chris Smith make up the Tribulation Force, and they are taking Bibles from a Global Community compound when guards burst into the warehouse. In Washington, Vice President John Mallory tells President Gerald Fitzhugh that Carpathia intends a biological strike on American soil, and an ambush follows. At the underground headquarters, Bruce Barnes marries Buck to Chloe and Rayford to Amanda White, a newcomer who knew Rayford's first wife. Fitzhugh works with Carolyn Miller, who poses as Carpathia's top aide inside Global Community headquarters, while Buck heads to Los Angeles and Rayford flies to New Babylon.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Left Behind: World at War is currently the last film in the Left Behind series, and it ends on a cliffhanger that is never resolved because the producers decided not to make a fourth installment.
- Clarence Gilyard Jr. was originally signed to reprise his role of Bruce Barnes but a scheduling conflict stopped him returning; the devout Catholic has said his priest was glad, since the films' premillennial rapturist theology opposes the Catholic Church's amillennial teachings.
